About these results
This report is an automated guide to support your professional judgement. It is not a pass or fail, and it is not an official or regulator-approved check.
What it is based on: the Flesch-Kincaid readability formula (sentence length and word length), plain English principles such as shorter sentences and active voice, and good practice in writing clear assessment questions, informed by Ofqual’s guidance on designing accessible assessments.
What it cannot take into account:
- individual learners: their reading level, special educational needs, English as an additional language, or access arrangements
- subject vocabulary that learners are expected to know. Some technical terms are part of what is being assessed and should stay
- layout, images, diagrams, tables and how the document looks on the page
- whether a task assesses the right content or criteria
The suggested reading ages for each level are a general guide, not a national standard. Reading-age scores are most reliable on texts of 100 words or more.
